Our Story

Since our inception over 50 years ago, we really have taken our brand on a remarkable journey. From our humble beginnings in Rhyl to the opening this complementary Fine Jewellery store, learn more about the fascinating history of Powells Jewellery

1967

Where it all began!

-

Dave and Joan Powell opened their first shop in Rhyl in 1967. They refurbished an old bank building and transformed it into a jewellers

1972

Joan and Dave moved to Prestatyn where they opened their second shop located at 78 High Street.

1974

Greg Powell started working full time at the Prestatyn shop at the young age of 16, trained on the work bench part time, and all the while studying gemmology at night school in Liverpool. He is now a fully certified Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain or FGA for short.

1990

Will started his jewellery training at the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and several years later he is now Chester's only fully certified diamond graduate.

2010

In 2010 we opened this shop just around the corner from our original shop - Powells Vintage Jewellery. This shop specializes in modern contemporary fine jewellery and bespoke designs - the perfect accompaniment to the vintage side.

2018

After one of Chester's most iconic and well known Jewellers & Silvermiths closed its doors for good in June 2018, Powells seized the opportunity and acquired the shop along with its name. They renovated and gave it a new lease of life ready for its re-opening in November 2018.

The store has retained many of its popular attributes, from the silverware to the in-store heritage museum but now specialises mainly in exquisite antique fine jewellery.
